Today on GAC - 3 Fox Drive
I asked Kim to share with us the story behind the song. I wanted to know what the inspiration for the writing was. Here’s her reply.
I wrote this song with a good friend of mine, Susanne Mumpower-Johnson. Susanne is married to Jamie Johnson of the Grascals. She really is the force behind the story of this song as her parents divorced when she was 14 years old. She and her mom had to sell their home. We wanted to write a song based on moving out of the only real home you’ve ever known and all the things that you cannot take with you. It’s something that just about everyone can relate to in one way or another.
Then I asked her about the video. How it came about, and what it was like for them to experience the production process.
When Chuck Rhodes of Koch Records heard this song, he thought the storyline would make a great music video. We (3 Fox Drive) were not expecting a video so it came as a wonderful suprise to us. Chuck and Amy Murray (also with Koch) assembled all the parts, players and props and sent us to the video site, which is a house owned by country singer, Brenda Lee. We had a great time shooting this video and learned quite quickly that it’s not all as glamorous as it’s cracked up to be. It was a long, very hot summer day but we think the outcome was great, considering Joel (our banjo player and my brother) was the only band member with any acting experience. He is going to kill me for telling everyone this, but he played The Artful Dodger in a highschool, musical version of Oliver.
Since she was being such a good sport I asked her one more question. I wanted her to share with us some little piece of inside knowledge about the video. There’s always something “inside” that you have to know about to understand, and I like to understand…
The coolest part of the video is the end. We paired up with the folks at Gilda’s Club and included their message “Living with cancer, come as you are” in our video. Gilda’s Club is an organization named after Gilda Radner. It is an organization dedicated to finding comfortable meeting places of support for people living with cancer and their families. They try to make the meeting place as homelike as possible. When Gilda’s Club purchases a residence, they make their “clubhouse” known by painting the door red.
We thought it would be a cool idea to give this sad song a happier ending by implying that the home was sold to Gilda’s Club and went on to be one of the clubhouses. When you watch the video, you’ll see that the door turns red. It’s all a bit subtle and doesn’t happen until the very end.
All in all it was a great experience for the whole band. We’re really excited to see the premier of the video on GAC.
Thanks Kim.
