Carol spoke with Claire about her latest Rounder CD, Whatcha Gonna Do, which was released on September 15. They will also play some tracks from the new album during the show.

“This truly is a quantum leap for the band. We wanted the album to reflect a very pared down, ‘band’ sound and it gives each of the members a chance to really shine. Our sound is broader. The Americana market is really established now and the album fits a wide range of tastes and we’ve been so delighted with the response we’re getting. The album appeals to so many different audiences – people that love bluegrass, country and folk music and that’s so gratifying. As artists we want to play to as many people as possible and offer them music that sings to their hearts.

We were especially pleased with the wonderful feedback we got from all the bluegrass DJs we met recently at the IBMA WOB conference just held in Nashville. So many of the DJs made a point to let us know how much they loved the album and they really welcomed the material and our sound as ‘refreshing’. It was great to see how much the bluegrass audience loves the album.”

“Dan talked about his early days as a mandolin player and vocalist with The Lonesome River Band. We spoke at length about the new album and Dan shared why he chose many of the songs included on the project and what the songs meant to him. We also reviewed his work in the movie ‚ÄòO Brother Where Art Thou’ and his experience working with George Clooney, the Coen Brothers and T-Bone Burnett.”

John will join Carol at 10:00 a.m. on Friday to read some excerpts and discuss the book. They will also preview some music from his upcoming CD, The Blessing Of The Strings, which features songs from his book.

John shared one thought about his upcoming interview…

“The irony of songs written from a book about North Carolina by North Carolina songwriters premiering in NEW YORK CITY (!!) is not lost on me.”

Original members Frank Lee (banjo) and David Bass (fiddle) have recruited Thomas Bailey (guitar) and Isaac Deal (bass) for the new iteration of the band, and they are working now on a new CD release for Rounder.

Brance posted last week with the news that Bluegrass Now would cease print publication of the magazine after after the upcoming May issue, and Wayne will talk with Carol about their plans to continue publishing the magazine online. He’ll be on at 11:15 (EDT).

First up at 10:15 will be Bill Evans, whose Soulgrass project has been making waves in both the bluegrass and jazz music worlds. A number of bluegrass and acoustic artists have dabbled with jazzy hybrids, but Evans is the first to seriously combine bluegrass rhythms and instruments with a jazz ensemble. His recordings have featured the work of Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan and Jerry Douglas and he currently has banjoist Ryan Cavanaugh in his touring band, which occasionally features Sam Bush as well.

Tom will surely discuss his work at Nechville Musical Products, where he has been in the forefront of pushing the boundaries of accepted methods of banjo construction. His solid body electric banjo, The Meteor, has been embraced by prominent progressive banjoist like Bela Fleck, and his Heli-Mount pot assembly design is a radical departure from the head-tensioning systems long employed in the banjo world.

Carol tells us that she also be interviewing Dolores Edgin on Friday’s show at 10:00 a.m. She was a former cast member on Hee Haw who sang backup on most of Porter Wagoner’s recordings. Dolores will share her memories of the country singer who passed away on October 28 between 10:00 and 11:00 with Carol.

Tony will be performing live in the studio, discussing his three IBMA nominations, cunducting a three minute mini-music lesson, and talking about his personal favorite recordings.
