The band consists of Randall Massengill on guitar, Mike Ramsey on mandolin, Tim Tipton on bass, Stuart Wyrick on banjo and Matt Leadbetter on resonator guitar. They are currently at work on a debut CD, and audio for two new songs can be heard on their web site or MySpace page.

Tennessee Shines is a monthly live broadcast from the Bijou Theatre, Knoxville, Tennessee, on the last Wednesday of the month. It is hosted by country/bluegrass singer Jim Lauderdale. The program, which commences at 8:00 p.m. (EST), showcases both local and national artists, with some of the latter including Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Marty Stuart and Joe Ely.

The Gibson Brothers will perform during this evening’s show along with Pinetop Perkins, Erick Baker and Megan McCormick.

Tennessee Shines is a project of the Knoxville Americana Music Foundation, produced by AC Entertainment and broadcast on WDVX.

The program Blue Plate Special airs on WDVX on weekdays at noon also.

They have created a number of preview videos to share some thoughts and music from the new CD.

They will be appearing Friday (1/23) on Blue Plate Special, the noontime live performance show on WDVX, where they are sure to highlight the material from Inside Out.

At noon, The Kati Penn Band will perform live on Blue Plate Special, broadcast from The Square Room in Knoxville, TN on WDVX.

They will perform material from her latest CD, My Turn To Cry. Joining Kati will be her touring band, which features CJ Cain on guitar, Jimmy Redden on banjo, Jame Kee on mandolin, Terry Poirer on bass and Penn on fiddle and vocals.

RB Morris will also appear on the show.

Then at 1:00 p.m., Marty Raybon will join Gracie Muldoon on WorldWideBluegrass.com for a discussion about his new CD, This That and the Other, and the band’s tour in support which begins in February.

At noon, Cumberland Gap Connection will perform on their Blue Plate Special program. They are one of the IBMA official showcase acts this year (playing Monday night), and will stop off for this show at the WDVX Knoxville studios on their way to Nashville for IBMA.

Then at 9:00 p.m. (EDT) the station will offer a live broadcast of Cherryholmes’ CD release party at The Rutledge. You’ll hear the music from their new CD, Cherryholmes III – Don’t Believe, which hits the streets tomorrow (9/30).

Today’s show (9/3) features Gold Heart a terrific young family bluegrass group from northern Virginia. The band is made up of the singing Gold sisters, Analise, Jocelyn and Shelby, and their dad Trent along with Zach Gilmer. Their harmony is emblematic of why family singing groups have had such an exalted place in the history of bluegrass, and they play with intensity and passion.

On Thursday (9/4) the raucous, jam-grass Hackensaw Boys will perform, followed by bluegrass bad boys Cadillac Sky on Friday. Expect C-Sky to preview material from their new CD, Gravity’s Our Enemy, released in August on Skaggs Family Records.

Blue Plate Special originates from Knoxville, TN, where it airs weekdays at noon (ET) on 102.9 and 105.9 FM, and via the WDVX streaming broadcast over the Internet. No audio archives, so be sure to listen live.

Tonight’s guests will be The SteelDrivers, Darrell Scott, Shawn Camp and the everybodyfields.

In addition to live performances from each of the musical guests, Jim will be chatting with the bands, finding out what they have been doing, and what they have on the horizon. He will also participating in a songwriters session with Shawn Camp and both Mike Henderson and Chris Stapleton from The SteelDrivers.

WDVX will be the base radio home for Tennessee Shines, and discussions are now underway to bring the show into wider syndication, and hopefully satellite radio as well.

Guests have been booked for the September edition of Tennessee Shines, and the lineup will be announced during this evening’s program. Tonight’s show is sold out, but tickets to attend future shows can be obtained through the Tennessee Theater box office, and as available, at the door.

They will surely be performing songs from their sophomore effort, CHH2, released this week on Rural Rhythm.

After the show on Friday, Carrie and the boys will be heading back to her hometown of Crossville, TN for a big in-store event at Wal-Mart at 6:00 p.m. where they will perform live and sign autographs.

They have been hard at work on a new CD, which Audie promises will be chock full of hard-driving, traditional bluegrass music. They are sure to preview it on the show today.

Joining Audie in the band are Evan Ward on banjo, Patrick McAvinue on fiddle, Jason Johnson on mandolin, and Matt Wallace on bass.

He appeared this past Monday on The Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour (video available online) and will be the guest on today’s (3/29) edition of Blue Plate Special on WDVX-FM in Knoxville, TN.

The new CD has Tim on his own in the studio, accompanying himself on a variety of stringed instruments (banjo, bouzouki, fiddle, guitar, mandolin) on 16 of his new compositions. Audio samples are available on Tim’s web site.

The New Hip is Missy’s musical youth movement, featuring a quartet of talented string musicians. Megan McCormick is on guitars and vocals, Michael Witcher on resonator guitar and vocals, Ethan Ballinger on mandolin and guitar, Lee Holland on percussion and Raines on bass.

Missy has spent her career as a bassist with a number of successful acts (most notably Claire Lynch) and has been named Bass Player of the Year seven times by the IBMA. This marks her first excursion as a band leader, with a group of eager co-conspirators in pursuing new sonic horizons.

On another Grasstowne-related note… Banjo picker Jason Davis is on the cover on the February issue of Banjo NewsLetter. At 19, I’m not sure if Jason is the youngest banjo artist to grace the cover of BNL, but he is bound to be close.
