Murphey was in town to perform with a number of Rural Rhythm artists at IBMA, and to showcase two new singles from his next RR CD, Buckaroo Blue Grass 2, due in February 2010. The first is a remake of Wildfire, his 1975 radio hit, sung as a duet with Carrie Hassler, and the other a new MMM song, Running Gun, which tells a classic western story done up bluegrass style.

Michael and Carrie are especially stoked about getting to perform the new version of Wildfire during halftime at the SMU-Navy game in Dallas on October 17. Look for it to be released for digital download around the 17th.

Bluegrass folks seemed to warmly embrace Murphey at IBMA, and he returned the favor posing for photos and signing autographs for fans. He did a cameo during Audie Blaylok & Redline’s main stage showcase set where he was met with enthusiastic applause.

Buckaroo Blue Grass 2 will feature a who’s who cast of bluegrass pickers, including Sam Bush, Charlie Cushman, Troy Engle, Pat Flynn, Andy Hall, Rob Ickes, Andy Leftwich among them.

Here are sneak peek samples of the two new singles.

Next year, they will celebrate 55 years in business recording bluegrass, Gospel and traditional American Music and will join with the Graves Mountain Festival of Music in Syria, VA for a one-of-a-kind, all day event.

We were treated to performances by Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain and Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, and had just missed a set from Audie Blaylock & Redline, who had turned in a brilliant show the night before on the main stage. Michael Martin Murphey made a special appearance with Carrie Hassler, where they sang a duet on his biggest hit, Wildfire, which the pair has recently re-recorded for Murphey’s second project with Rural Rhythm, due in February of next year.

During the IIIrd Tyme Out’s set, 1970s country star Lynn Anderson joined them on stage for a rousing version of Rocky Top. She was lively and animated, and clearly enjoying herself.

All this music, however, was leading up to the announcement of Rural Rhythm and Graves Mountain collaborating for the festival in June. Six Rural Rhythm artists will appear on Friday, June 4, and the entire day will be given over to a 55th birthday party or the label. Kyle Cantrell of Sirius-XM will serve as emcee, with performances from The Crowe Brothers, Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain, Audie Blaylock & Redline, Lou Reid and Carolina, Lonesome River Band and Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out.

All of the day’s music will be recorded for a commemorative CD to be released later in 2010. Many of these artists will combine for special sets.

Crowe Brothers with Russell Moore, Sammy Shelor

Carrie Hassler & Hard and Brandon Rickman

Audie Blaylock & Redline, Carrie Hassler, Russell Moore, and Lou Reid

Graves Moutain Jam and Rural Rhythm all-star tribute featuring Grave Mountain Memories: Carl Jackson, Mark Newton, Russell Newton, Lou Reid, Carrie Hassler, Andy Ball, Sammy Shelor, Mike Anglin, Justin Haynes

My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains – Brandon Rickman, Crowe Brothers, Audie Blaylock, Mike Hartgrove, Wayne Benson, Steve Dilling, Edgar Loudermilk

Instrumental Jam featuring many of the Rural Rhythm artists

You can find ticket and schedule information for the Graves Mountain festival on their web site. We’ll post with more details about the live CD as they emerge.

Lou is pleased with the new project.

"I believe, as a whole, that this project encompasses more of my personal musical taste than any recording I have put out to date. The songs bring in all the elements of bluegrass that I love; the contemporary, traditional and gospel. We played with each song, working on arrangements and specifically the harmonies. We all shared different ideas – getting each song where it needed to be."

Rural Rhythm will include a single from the upcoming Reid release on their next Fresh Cuts & Key Tracks CDs (#5), shipping to radio before the end of May.

The album, produced by Ron Stewart, includes 12 songs, several of which were written by Webb. Among those are two songs, re-mixed and re-mastered, from Webb’s previous two albums: the hit If It Weren’t For Bluegrass Music (I’d Go Crazy), which reached No.4 on the Bluegrass Unlimited Top 30 Singles Chart, and A Hard Row to Hoe.

Rural Rhythm has just released two tracks from the album on the Rural Rhythm Fresh Cuts & Key Tracks No.4 radio compilation CD, namely Teardrop Inn and Heartland.

Teardrop Inn, written by Mike Wells, is an emotionally-packed love story tragically gone wrong, while Heartland was written by Tommy Webb and Sam Passamano, Jr.

DJ Gracie Muldoon, of WorldWideBluegrass.com says of the title song:

"Heartland reaches the heart and soul of the everyday working man and woman and their plight enduring through these hard times, just trying to survive. Thanks Tommy for hittin’ the nail on the head with this tune at this most difficult time in our beloved America, and the rest of the World.”

Webb, from Langley, Floyd County, Kentucky, near to the well-known highway Route 23, in a region from where so many award-winning bluegrass music artists have originated, has a deep voice like no one else in the genre. He writes passionately about life in the heartland, a life that he experiences personally.

With Tommy Webb (lead vocals, guitar, clawhammer banjo) on Heartland are Chris Goble (banjo, harmony vocals), Kenny O’Quinn (mandolin, harmony vocals), Danny Stiltner (bass, harmony vocals), Ron Stewart (fiddle, mandolin, resonator guitar, bass, harmony vocals) and Sherri Stewart (harmony vocals).

The band has been tracking at Greg Luck’s studio and are hoping for a late spring or early summer release.

Sam Passamano, President of Rural Rhythm Records, is delighted to welcome them to the label.

“I have been a big fan of Russell Moore’s singing for years. He and IIIrd Tyme Out have created some of my favorite music over the years, so you can imagine how thrilled I am to be a part of this new chapter for Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out. It’s been 5 years since their last full studio album release, The Best Durn Ride, and we can’t wait to share with everyone their powerful new studio album. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship together.”

In additional to founder Moore on guitar and lead vocals, the album will feature current members Steve Dilling on banjo, Wayne Benson on mandolin, Justen Haynes on fiddle, and Edgar Loudermilk on bass.

Russell shared a few words about the nearly completed project…

“We’ve been in the studio and the tracks are sounding GREAT! We’ve still got a couple of days of recording before we get to the mixing stage, but it’s going very smoothly at this point.

The band is producing the recording ourselves and we may, or may not, have guest artists; we’ll decide that for sure at a later date. More than half are original songs – many from within the band – as well as a few covers. Some of the writers include me, Wayne Benson, Bill Castle, Dee Gaskin, Becky Buller, Kim Fox and Ray Edwards.”

A new 3TO album will be great news for the band’s many fans, among whom I count myself.

Over the course of the last year, Borders has steadily reduced the amount of in-store floor space dedicated to music, by 30%. Music now owns only 7% of the floor space in Borders stores. Considering their primary business is books, we can’t really complain too much.

The articles I’ve read have described the cut back as “a response to softening demand for CDs.” That seems like a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy to me. If sales are down and you cut back shelf space, it stands to reason that with fewer titles to choose from, sales will decline even further. However, there is no doubt that a sales slump for CDs is occurring that precipitated the cut back.

Borders recently released a third-quarter sales report that showed both a decrease of revenue and profit in year to year, same quarter sales. Revenue store wide was down roughly 10% from the same period last year. Much of the decline could be a result of economic concerns in September and October of this year, which affected nearly all retailers in every market.

With the reduction of floor space dedicated to music products, Borders is increasingly interested in exclusive products that consumers won’t be able to find elsewhere.

Rural Rhythm Records, regularly places product in Borders stores, and has developed Borders exclusives in the past. I spoke with Sam Passimano from Rural Rhythm about the cut back, and how it might affect bluegrass music.

This actually has be going on for several months, so it is not really new for us. Several months back, (end of the 1st Quarter), they reduced their inventory and floor space dedicated to music products. However, they continue to support our new releases titles and show good sales on a weekly basis. They also are very aggressive with their Borders Rewards program and do a good job of bringing both book and music buyers into their stores.

That’s good news for bluegrass music.

Back in January, the NPD Group listed Borders as the fifth largest US retailer of music (tied with FYE/Coconuts). At the time Borders controled 3% of the market.

Despite the decline in revenues, Borders did improve overall financial operations.

Borders has successfully reduced debt, improved operating cash flow, lowered expenses, improved gross margin-excluding occupancy-and improved inventory productivity during a time of extreme economic challenge

In light of these improvements, Borders’ management announced it is no longer considering the sale of the company.

Rural Rhythm Records has been releasing some really good bluegrass in the last few years. They’ve also been working hard to make sure we all get to hear this great music. One of their efforts in that regard has been the creation of Fresh Cuts & Key Tracks, a radio sampler featuring singles from current and upcoming releases.

The second edition of this radio release was sent to Bluegrass Radio at the end of last week, so you DJs should be receiving it sometime soon. Rural Rhythm was kind enough to give us a sneak peek of the new tracks on the disc.

The disc contains five tracks, three of which are new tracks from upcoming releases.

Them Blues is the first single to be released from the new Lonesome River Band CD, No Turning Back. The CD is scheduled for release early next month. Fans of the LRB signature sound will certainly enjoy this new cut. I’ve embedded a YouTube video of them performing the track live on stage, at the end of this post. The audio doesn’t compare with the studio cut, but you’ll get the idea. Be listening for this one on your favorite bluegrass radio station later this week!

I Call It Gone is from the upcoming second album from Melonie Cannon, And The Wheels Turn. The album was co-produced by Ronnie Bowman and Buddy Cannon and features a very impressive line up of musicians. The CD is scheduled for release in early October.

Cindy Mae is an uptempo bluegrass number in the tradition of brother duets such as the Stanley Brothers. The Crowe Brothers (Josh and Wayne) deliver on this one. This track is from a newly recorded CD, Brothers-N-Harmony, scheduled for release in late September of 2008. The song was written by Cody Shuler of Pine Mountain Railroad. Anyone who likes good traditional brother harmony style bluegrass will want to have this CD I’m sure.

The other two tracsk are The Road From Rosine and Fox Run The Henhouse. Fox Run The Henhouse is from the previously released Tim Hensley CD, Long Monday. The Road From Rosine is an instrumental written by Jim VanCleve and debuted at the 2007 IBMA Award Show.

Radio DJs should be on the lookout for this CD, and fans of good bluegrass should be listening for these tracks.

Here’s the live video of LRB performing Them Blues. Enjoy!

The Brigade is comprised of: Aaron McDaris (The Grascals) on banjo and harmony vocals; Darrell Webb (Rhonda Vincent & The Rage) on guitar and lead vocals; Ashby Frank (Special Consensus) lead vocals and mandolin; Jim VanCleve (Mountain Heart) on fiddle; and Randy Barnes (NewFound Road) on bass.

The Brigade is today’s modern version of the Sidemen. Started a year or so ago as a fun midweek gig at The Station Inn in Nashville, The Mashville Brigade releases it’s first CD on April 22, 2008. The CD is produced by the band’s own Jim VanCleve, and contains 16 tracks, all of them standard bluegrass hits. Bearing the title Bluegrass Smash Hits, Volume 1, this disc is the first in a new series of releases planned by Rural Rhythm Records.

Ashby Frank commented on the genesis of the group.

I’ve gotten to pick with these guys at various festivals and in the halls and rooms of events like IBMA, SPBMGA, and the Galax Fiddlers Convention for years. Since we both grew up in North Carolina, I’ve known Jim for the longest, actually before I even really got into Bluegrass. The first time I ever played on a Bluegrass Festival stage was with Jim in Denton, NC. I think we put together a band with my sister and opened up the festival on a Tuesday or Wednesday night.

Randy, Darrell, Jim, Aaron and myself have performed with each other as a part of quite a few different collaborations, through fill-in work or special events like the MACC Festival in Columbus, OH. Once all of us had moved to Nashville, we talked about getting something together to play around town and maybe a festival or two. It took us a few years to get together, but it’s finally worked out, and it’s a whole lot of fun.

The band started basically as a new version of the Sidemen, the infamous group that used to perform every Tuesday night at the Station Inn. The Mashville Brigade started filling that same time slot and as Jim VanCleve tells it, one thing just led to another.

The Mashville Brigade has really grown into something much larger than we ever could have anticipated from when we first began playing at the Station Inn a little over a year ago. It all basically started as an outlet for us to have some fun while playing the music we all grew up on. But since the bluegrass culture around Nashville is really a pretty tight-knit bunch of friends, we suddenly had a good sized audience each Tuesday night, full of friends and family, in a room that is known for bringing out the best in people. This comfortable atmosphere really allowed the music to grow and take on it’s own unique personality. It was really starting to blow up, and the crowds just kept getting better each week. So, after some time, we started thinking, “this band really needs to record something”! Now, after listening back to the masters of the Mashville Brigade’s first album, I can honestly say that we are all very happy with what we were able to do!

The CD was recorded in a rather unique manner for the age we live in. The guys met at the Station Inn, their primary creative outlet, during the daylight hours and tracked the entire thing in under 8 hours with no overdubs.

We recorded this album with kind of a “throw back” philosophy in mind. We set everything up on the stage of the Station Inn, gathered in circle around the microphones, and just played! So, if somebody missed something, we had to start the whole song over. Plus, we recorded the entire album in the span of about eight hours one day in January. We didn’t have a crowd in there, as we were recording during the daylight hours. But, it was really interesting to record like that. There was an added element of pressure to get it right the first time, and that was actually a lot of fun, I thought! As we were recording, you couldn’t help but think of how Lester and Earl and Bill must have felt in their classic sessions so many years ago!

Normally CDs are only recorded outside the studio if it’s to be a live performance in front of an audience, but Ashby says they chose the Station Inn for several reasons.

Like Jim said, our philosophy was really an old school mindset. We all gathered round in a circle on stage at the Inn. That place is really a second home to all of us. We’ve been playing there most Tuesday nights for a year and we wanted to record there to capture the vibe, energy, and looseness that we’re used to having at those shows.

The CD opens with My Home’s Across The Bluegrass Mountains and the hits keep coming. For fans of traditional bluegrass, this will be a must have recording. The guys do it up right. The playing is immaculate, perfectly timed, tasteful, traditional and yet innovative. These guys may be young, but it’s clear they understand what hard driving traditional bluegrass is all about. Tunes like White House Blues will make you want to play along, if you can keep up! The four instrumental tracks are some of my favorite cuts on the disc, but all the tunes are bluegrass SMASH hits performed by a group of young pickers who’ll make you feel good about the future of traditional bluegrass music.

Here’s the track listing:

My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains

Banks of the Ohio

White House Blues

John Henry (instrumental)

Take This Hammer

Sitting on the Top of the World

Two Dollar Bill

Bury Me Beneath the Willow

Little Maggie

Going Across the Sea (instrumental)

I’ll Remember You Love In My Prayers

Lonesome Road Blues

Ain’t Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone

Salt Creek (instrumental)

Roving Gambler

Sally Goodin’ (instrumental)

I don’t think I could say it any better than Ashby did in his last comment to me.

This record is definitely a traditional Bluegrass record with very traditional songs, but there’s a good bit of contemporary feel that goes along with us being younger players. We always try to have as much fun as possible, and make our shows as high energy as possible. We want people to have a good time and come back and see us whenever they can. Hopefully this recording gives listeners that feeling, and lets them feel like they’re hanging out in Downtown Nashville enjoying a good night of hardcore Bluegrass.

It did for me.

If you need a fix of hardcore, traditional bluegrass music with a throbbing pulse and insistent drive, you’ll want to pick this CD up as soon as you can.

Hensley has toured as a side man for Ricky Skaggs, Patty Loveless, and Kenny Chesney. Now he’s stepping into the spotlight with his first ever solo recording, Long Monday.

A multi-instrumentalist, Hensley has previously played both mandolin and guitar with the stars he’s toured with. He’s also contributed backing vocals to many of their well known songs. On Long Monday that vocal arrangement is reversed. Hensley is still playing guitar and mandolin, but this time he’s singing lead, with background vocals coming from Ronnie Bowman, Melonie Cannon, Vince Gill, Sonya Isaacs, Patty Loveless, and more.

The CD is produced by Country Music super-star Kenny Chesney, with whom Hensley has been performing for six years.

Tim gets up there every night and rocks with us, but it’s after the shows, walking back to the bus that you can hear his voice in the halls, singing what he truly loves. You hear enough of someone singing something that really matters to them, well, you wanna help them realize their music, too. That’s how it felt with Tim and the bluegrass stuff…It was letting the world get to hear something we’ve been lucky enough to get to hear almost every night for the last five or six years.

Chesney brought in ACM Song of the Year writer Buddy Cannon to co-produce the project.

Hensley traces his musical roots back to his days singing in church with his family and then Southern Gospel bands, before moving into bluegrass and commercial country territory. The CD reflects his musical journey. Many of the songs have a more contemplative feel that is typical on a bluegrass album. Don’t worry, there’s some hard driving bluegrass present as well though. It takes the form of tunes like Fox Run The Henhouse and Shady Grove.

Joining Hensley instrumentally are such bluegrass luminaries as Rob Ickes, Aubrey Haynie, Wyatt Rice, Tim Stafford, Adam Steffey, and Dave Talbot.

The songs come from all directions on this CD, some are traditional tunes that you’ve heard before, arranged afresh by Hensley and Chesney. Others are written by bluegrass songwriters such as Tim Stafford, Shawn Camp, Larry Cordle, and Ronnie Bowman. Also present are tunes from the pens of John Prine and Rodney Crowell. Hensley wrote one of the tunes himself.

If you like a smoother sounding bluegrass, this CD is the one for you. The press release accompanying the CD sums it up quite well.

Blending the various genres he has passed through – Southern Gospel, bluegrass, singer/songwriter, mountain soul and strait-up the middle country, Long Monday is a survey course in much of what’s great about organic American music.

Make no mistake, this is not a country album. It’s just not a banjo-centered bluegrass record. While it contains its share of fiery banjo picking, it tends to center more around the sound of the acoustic guitar as played by Hensley, Stafford, and Rice. And that’s not a bad thing!

Audio samples are available on Tim’s website.

All future releases, including the April release of Dwight McCall’s new CD will be distributed according to this new agreement. Over the next six months, the label plans to begin adding older titles from their catalog as well.

The first release in this new collaboration will be Old Photograph, Randy’s fourth solo effort, due in the Spring of 2007. A single, Rockwell’s Gold, will be released in January on the next Prime Cuts Of Bluegrass (Volume 85).

Randy is especially excited about the new CD, as he will be listed as author or co-author on nine of the twelve tracks. Guest artists include Scott Vestal, Tim Crouch, Jim Hurst, Stephen Mougin – and a duet with Rhonda Vincent – along with contributions from his band, The Lites.

Sammy Passamano with Rural Rhythm tells us that they have been talking with Randy for several months about bringing him into the family of artists, and are delighted that things have worked out so quickly.

Randy’s last CD, I’m Torn, saw significant chart action in 2004 on the Bluegrass Unlimited National Bluegrass Survey, on both the album and single charts.

We’ll keep an eye out for Old Photograph audio samples online, and will update when we find them.

The debut CD with her band, Hard Rain, is being produced by Mountain Heart’s Jim VanCleve, and the first single, Seven Miles From Wichita, is being distributed to radio via Prime Cuts Of Bluegrass. She has signed with Rural Rhythm Records who will release the self-titled project on September 26.

We don’t have a lot more information about Carrie or her band, but she does have several audio samples up on her web site. These are full downloads, but not of the finished track that will appear on the CD when it is released.

Her band is made up of Josh Miller on banjo, Kevin McKinnon on mandolin, Keith McKinnon on guitar, Josh Swift on resophonic guitar and Travis Anderson on bass. They are all featured on the new CD, along with guest artists (and Rural Rhythm labelmates) Jim VanCleve and Clay Jones, as well as Adam Steffey and Darrin Vincent.
