Bauc told us that he really enjoyed working with Dale Ann, whom he considers to be a great friend.

“It was a nice variation for me working up her material, and it was a great creative time, but I really wanted to get back to playing more hard driving stuff. That’s more my style.”

Baucom mentioned that he hoped to be able to be available for more banjo clinics and workshops, such as the North Carolina Banjo Clinic where he will be teaching in November.

Mashville Brigade started as a Tuesday night gig at Nashville’s Station Inn with a rotating group of Music City sidemen. Jim Van Cleve is on fiddle, Darrell Webb on guitar, Ashby Frank on mandolin, Aaron McDaris on banjo and Randall Barnes on bass. Each works with a national touring band, and the Tuesday shows became a fun way to pick together on bluegrass chestnuts they all knew and loved.

After the release of a Rural Rhythm CD, Bluegrass Smash Hits Volume 1, and the resulting radio play, the guys have decided to take the show on the road, and will be available for limited live appearances during the 2010 season. Given his busy schedule with Rhonda Vincent, McDaris was unable to commit to any Mashville shows, and as no one can mash down on traditional bluegrass like Terry Baucom, he was an obvious choice.

Booking for the Mashville Brigade shows is being handled by Ashby Frank, who can be reached by phone (615-290-5533) or email for further details.

The Mountain Heart with Tony Rice shows are managed by Mountain Heart and Keith Case & Associates.

As it is a lengthy piece, we will break it into two parts, and run the rest next Sunday.

A series of rambles about CDs by bluegrassmercury…

A big bundle of CDs has landed on my desk in the recent past. They include those by Danny Paisley, the Infamous Stringdusters, Williams & Clark Expedition, Kenny & Amanda Smith Band, Daughters Of Bluegrass, High Windy, Gold Heart, Cherryholmes, Earl Scruggs, The Mashville Brigade, Crowe Brothers, Ralph Stanley II, Longview, Big Country Bluegrass.

The Infamous Stringdusters - Travis Book (bass, vocals), Jesse Cobb (mandolin), Andy Falco (guitar), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle, vocals), Andy Hall (dobro, vocals) and Chris Pandolphi (banjo) – are a bunch of young honchos who have just released their second album. This self-titled collection (Sugar Hill 4043) is growing on me. Book’s soulful vocals shine on Won‚Äòt Be Coming Back, the melodic Bound For Tennessee and the bluesy Get It While You Can. Garrett is a fine vocalist as well, as demonstrated on Three Days In July (historians, think Gettysburg, 1863), I Wonder and You Can‚Äòt Handle The Truth. There’s three enjoyable instrumentals in Glass Elevator by Pandolphi, Golden Ticket by Cobb and Black Rock by Hall, keeping interest going until the end. Overall the sextet produces a warm, full sound with fiddle and Dobro ¬Æ prominent, rather than just having one or other, as a lot of groups do.

There aren’t any surprises on Danny Paisley’s The Room Over Mine (Rounder 0589); he continues where he and his father left off. The 13-tack collection epitomizes the hard-driving Galax area mountain-style of bluegrass, with fiddle kick-offs and driving banjo ringing loud and clear. There‚Äòs a couple of outstanding new ‚Äòold’ songs in Chris Stuart’s opener, Don’t Throw Mamma’s Flowers Away and Drowning Sailor, both of which suit Paisley to a ‚ÄòT’. Most of the rest are bluegrass versions of songs from the classic country catalogue, with a couple from his dad’s repertoire, now re-done. In the former category are The Convict And The Rose, written by Betty Chapin and Robert A. King and recorded by Marty Robbins and Charlie Moore among others, I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name, done in a honk-tonk style with walking bass and I’m Coming Back But I Don’t Know When, a song Danny first heard done by Charlie Monroe.

In the second group are At the End of a Long Lonely Day, now done in different way and with different lyrics and A Memory of You, previously recorded by Jim and Jesse. Donnie Eldreth Jr does a great job having learned how to follow Danny’s lead singing and does likewise when he is singing lead as on Another Bridge to Burn, a song from Ray Price’s repertoire. Those Paisleys and the Lundy brothers know how to do it and they do it exceptionally well.

High Windy is a North Carolina-based quintet that has been together for a few years. A Greater Storm (on the Mountain Home label, # 11292) is their first album. I have been listening to this CD for a while now and get a lot of enjoyment each time that I play it, which is often.

How would I describe High Windy? They’re not traditional, they’re not contemporary, they are both at the same time. If I were to mention that the banjo player, Patrick McDougal, wrote the hit song Wheels for Dan Tyminski, then perhaps you will understand what I am saying. McDougal wrote five of the songs featured on this album, including Stuck in the Rain, the gospel song The Richest Man to God, Dance Around the Daisies, which has an old-time and Celtic edge, and Four Winds, all of which McDougal sings with great authority and soul, with a slight mountain edge.

Shane Lail (guitar) sings lead on five songs also, three of which, Love of a Lifetime, Good Ole Days and Coming Home, are written by him. He has a slightly lighter voice, but that doesn’t detract from his soulfulness. Last but by no means least in terms of song writing ability is mandolin player, Ty Gilpin’s Iron Horse, an ode to the fact that the industrial age didn’t always bring a good life. Anchoring everything is Mark Davis on bass and harmony vocals. While Tim Gardner plays some excellent fiddle lines and clawhammer banjo on Dance Around the Daisies, as well as providing harmony vocals on three songs. High Windy has been getting a considerable amount of air play and is a band that should go very far. Very highly recommended.

Brand New Set Of Blues is the fifth career CD for Williams & Clark Expedition, a quartet from Sparta, Tennessee. The Williams referred to is, in the first instance, Blake Williams, well known as the banjo player for Bill Monroe for many years. Additionally, there is Kimberly Williams, the bass player and Blake’s wife, who shares the lead vocal duties with guitarist Wayne Southard. Bobby Clark, (mandolin, vocals), from Oklahoma originally, but living in Nashville for the past 25 years, working with Vassar Clements, Larry McNeely, Peter Rowan, the Bluegrass Cardinals and Mike Snider, completes the line-up. They are ably assisted by Tim Crouch (fiddle), Buck White (piano) and harmony singers Claire Lynch and Jonathan East.

The members of the band provide almost all of the 13 numbers here, many from Blake Williams or from Williams in collaboration with Southards. Williams composed the banjo showcase Highlands Ramble and Clark the mandolin piece Jalapeno Quickstep. The album begins with the mid-tempo title song, followed by the bouncy Destiny’s Highway then the more sedate In My Heart. Other highlights are the singing of Southards on (Love is Coming to) A Heart Near You, the up-tempo gospel song Travelin’ Heaven’s Road which Southards leads with Ms Williams harmonising, similarly another gospel number Marching, on which the roles are reversed, the jazzy fiddle, the piano solo and the split guitar/mandolin break on the swinging Goodbye Heartache (Hello You) and the waltz-like Heaven On Earth, with Ms Lynch singing the harmony part.

Anybody who has seen this band live will know that Blake Williams is a bit of a comedian; they will be pleased to know that there is a bonus track of some jokes, obviously recorded at a festival or concert. Clark, Southards and Williams are all virtuoso pickers and that element of their talents that is given as great a profile as the vocals from Ms Williams and Southards.

The Mashville Brigade is a "young but seasoned" assembly of pickers who periodically moonlight away from their regular bands by playing at the world-famous Station Inn. Rural Rhythm Records has released an album, Bluegrass Smash Hits Volume 1 (Rural Rhythm 325), of recordings ‚Äòlive’ at the Station Inn. I say "live" in this instance to indicate that all tracks were done without any overdubs or editing, rather than in front of an audience.

Anyway, the Brigade consists of Randy Barnes (acoustic bass), Ashby Frank (mandolin, vocals), Aaron McDaris (banjo, vocals), Jim Van Cleve (fiddle) and Darrell Webb (guitar, vocals), who play their way through a set of 16 songs and tunes of long-standing popularity. Individual credits aren’t given on a track-by-track basis, but Webb and Frank share the lead vocal duties with McDaris providing the harmonies. Although there isn’t any doubt that the material chosen is, in the present-day parlance, a ‘hit’, the group digs a little deeper to avoid the blindingly obvious like Rocky Top. Without rejecting their grounding, the Brigade play their arrangements of My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains, White House Blues, Bury me beneath the Willow, I’ll Remember you Love in my Prayers, Ain’t Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone, Little Maggie, Going Across The Sea and Salt Creek with a modern attitude. I bet they’re fun to watch.

Live And Learn (Rebel 1828) is the latest CD from the Kenny and Amanda Smith Band. It features 13 tracks with Amanda Smith taking the lead on all but three, those featuring husband Kenny. The duo share the harmony work along with guest Alan Bartram. Zachary McLamb (bass) and Aaron Williams (mandolin) round out the band. The quartet is further supplemented by Ron Stewart (fiddle and banjo).

Ms Smith’s demonstrates the vocal capacity to deal with slower numbers such as Ramblers Blues, Just One More Time, Words You Use and Man Looks On The Outside as well as the up-tempo ones like the rockabilly I’d Jump The Mississippi, You’re Gonna See Me Shine and Heartbreak Express. The first group appeal more so than the latter. The stand-out track is the well-arranged traditional song Cruel Willie with excellent close harmony and top-notch fiddle playing. The tracks on which Kenny Smith sings lead are well programmed into the mix, Changing kicking off the album with Randall Collins and Icicle Canyon placed at strategic intervals. Bluegrass very much in the modern groove.

Longview is an ad-hoc band, a combination of pickers from other bands doing a bit of moonlighting. Their latest CD, Deep In the Mountains (Rounder 0578), is the fourth using the Longview name. However, the personnel here is slightly different from previously, Dudley Connell, Joe Mullins and Glen Duncan having been replaced by Lou Reid, JD Crowe and Ron Stewart. James King, Don Rigsby and Marshall Wilborn remain from the original aggregation.

Just like the Bluegrass Album Band, Longview re-energises the old songs; neglected gems from classic bands or lesser-known regional acts. I say old songs, Room at the Top of the Stairs, Baptism of Jessie Taylor and Weathered Grey Stone are relatively recent, of course. It’s great to see bands mining the Dudley Connell song book. King, Rigsby and Reid share the bulk of the vocal duties, singing either lead or harmony, with Stewart, Crowe and Wilborn covering the baritone part. Crowe sings a low tenor on At the First Fall of Snow. Other classic songs with matching performances are Don’t Leave Me Alone, Eating Out Of Your Hand, Old Log Cabin, I Love You Yet, Georgia Bound and I’ll Love Nobody But You. Heart-warming stuff!

To be continued…

The Brigade is comprised of: Aaron McDaris (The Grascals) on banjo and harmony vocals; Darrell Webb (Rhonda Vincent & The Rage) on guitar and lead vocals; Ashby Frank (Special Consensus) lead vocals and mandolin; Jim VanCleve (Mountain Heart) on fiddle; and Randy Barnes (NewFound Road) on bass.

The Brigade is today’s modern version of the Sidemen. Started a year or so ago as a fun midweek gig at The Station Inn in Nashville, The Mashville Brigade releases it’s first CD on April 22, 2008. The CD is produced by the band’s own Jim VanCleve, and contains 16 tracks, all of them standard bluegrass hits. Bearing the title Bluegrass Smash Hits, Volume 1, this disc is the first in a new series of releases planned by Rural Rhythm Records.

Ashby Frank commented on the genesis of the group.

I’ve gotten to pick with these guys at various festivals and in the halls and rooms of events like IBMA, SPBMGA, and the Galax Fiddlers Convention for years. Since we both grew up in North Carolina, I’ve known Jim for the longest, actually before I even really got into Bluegrass. The first time I ever played on a Bluegrass Festival stage was with Jim in Denton, NC. I think we put together a band with my sister and opened up the festival on a Tuesday or Wednesday night.

Randy, Darrell, Jim, Aaron and myself have performed with each other as a part of quite a few different collaborations, through fill-in work or special events like the MACC Festival in Columbus, OH. Once all of us had moved to Nashville, we talked about getting something together to play around town and maybe a festival or two. It took us a few years to get together, but it’s finally worked out, and it’s a whole lot of fun.

The band started basically as a new version of the Sidemen, the infamous group that used to perform every Tuesday night at the Station Inn. The Mashville Brigade started filling that same time slot and as Jim VanCleve tells it, one thing just led to another.

The Mashville Brigade has really grown into something much larger than we ever could have anticipated from when we first began playing at the Station Inn a little over a year ago. It all basically started as an outlet for us to have some fun while playing the music we all grew up on. But since the bluegrass culture around Nashville is really a pretty tight-knit bunch of friends, we suddenly had a good sized audience each Tuesday night, full of friends and family, in a room that is known for bringing out the best in people. This comfortable atmosphere really allowed the music to grow and take on it’s own unique personality. It was really starting to blow up, and the crowds just kept getting better each week. So, after some time, we started thinking, “this band really needs to record something”! Now, after listening back to the masters of the Mashville Brigade’s first album, I can honestly say that we are all very happy with what we were able to do!

The CD was recorded in a rather unique manner for the age we live in. The guys met at the Station Inn, their primary creative outlet, during the daylight hours and tracked the entire thing in under 8 hours with no overdubs.

We recorded this album with kind of a “throw back” philosophy in mind. We set everything up on the stage of the Station Inn, gathered in circle around the microphones, and just played! So, if somebody missed something, we had to start the whole song over. Plus, we recorded the entire album in the span of about eight hours one day in January. We didn’t have a crowd in there, as we were recording during the daylight hours. But, it was really interesting to record like that. There was an added element of pressure to get it right the first time, and that was actually a lot of fun, I thought! As we were recording, you couldn’t help but think of how Lester and Earl and Bill must have felt in their classic sessions so many years ago!

Normally CDs are only recorded outside the studio if it’s to be a live performance in front of an audience, but Ashby says they chose the Station Inn for several reasons.

Like Jim said, our philosophy was really an old school mindset. We all gathered round in a circle on stage at the Inn. That place is really a second home to all of us. We’ve been playing there most Tuesday nights for a year and we wanted to record there to capture the vibe, energy, and looseness that we’re used to having at those shows.

The CD opens with My Home’s Across The Bluegrass Mountains and the hits keep coming. For fans of traditional bluegrass, this will be a must have recording. The guys do it up right. The playing is immaculate, perfectly timed, tasteful, traditional and yet innovative. These guys may be young, but it’s clear they understand what hard driving traditional bluegrass is all about. Tunes like White House Blues will make you want to play along, if you can keep up! The four instrumental tracks are some of my favorite cuts on the disc, but all the tunes are bluegrass SMASH hits performed by a group of young pickers who’ll make you feel good about the future of traditional bluegrass music.

Here’s the track listing:

My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains

Banks of the Ohio

White House Blues

John Henry (instrumental)

Take This Hammer

Sitting on the Top of the World

Two Dollar Bill

Bury Me Beneath the Willow

Little Maggie

Going Across the Sea (instrumental)

I’ll Remember You Love In My Prayers

Lonesome Road Blues

Ain’t Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone

Salt Creek (instrumental)

Roving Gambler

Sally Goodin’ (instrumental)

I don’t think I could say it any better than Ashby did in his last comment to me.

This record is definitely a traditional Bluegrass record with very traditional songs, but there’s a good bit of contemporary feel that goes along with us being younger players. We always try to have as much fun as possible, and make our shows as high energy as possible. We want people to have a good time and come back and see us whenever they can. Hopefully this recording gives listeners that feeling, and lets them feel like they’re hanging out in Downtown Nashville enjoying a good night of hardcore Bluegrass.

It did for me.

If you need a fix of hardcore, traditional bluegrass music with a throbbing pulse and insistent drive, you’ll want to pick this CD up as soon as you can.

Audio clips are available on the group’s Myspace page.

Ashby Frank is a talented musician who, despite his youth, has already been a part of several notable ensembles. At 24 years old, Ashby – who is the current mandolinist with Special Consensus – has toured with Marty Raybon, Alecia Nugent and Ronnie Bowman.

He lives in Nashville, which necessitates a lot of travel since Special C is based in Chicago, but Ashby feels that Music City offers him a great many opportunities for session work and musical interaction that he can’t find elsewhere.

One of those offshoots is Mashville Brigade, a loose-knit group of sidemen who get together on Tuesday nights at Nashville’s fabled Station Inn. Members include Frank on mandolin, Darrel Webb on guitar, Jim Van Cleve on fiddle, Greg Martin on bass and Aaron McDarris on banjo. They typically perform bluegrass classics, but have developed a strong following based as much on their quirky, irreverent sense of humor as for their prodigious musical abilities.

One of those special talents is vocal impressions, and a recent YouTube video demonstrates that Ashby and Darrell have the goods to give such stalwarts of the genre as Tim Stafford and Steve Gulley a run for their money. The video is a bit shaky but the audio is fine, and their take on John Conlee and Willie Nelson is hilarious.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Ashby tells us that this side project has been a blast for all concerned, allowing the members to have some fun outside of their primary gigs. Webb now tours with Rhonda Vincent, Van Cleve is a part of Mountain Heart and McDarris plays with The Grascals, so a Tuesday night playing bluegrass favorites is a welcome weekly diversion.

We’ve been doing the Mashville Brigade thing for over a year, and we’re all really happy that it’s turned into one of the biggest nights of the week at the Station Inn. Every Tuesday is kind of like a party/family reunion.

So many people have requested some kind of recorded music from us, and fortunately the great folks over at Rural Rhythm found a way for us to do that.

It’s really awesome for me to get to play with some of my best friends and in my opinion some of the best pickers and singers in bluegrass every Tuesday when we’re all off the road. We really wanted to capture the live feeling and energy that this group of guys carries to the stage, so we recorded it live at the Station Inn but without an audience.

All of the tunes are very traditional bluegrass songs, and I think it’s going to give people that don’t live in Nashville a chance to feel like they’re hanging out in the Station Inn late on a Tuesday night.

The project will be titled something to the effect of ”Smash Hits of Bluegrass” because we’re covering some of the most played, requested, and well loved classics that the genre has to offer, basically the songs of the older generation performed by a group of young pickers.

We think that this will help people that aren’t very bluegrass savvy become more knowledgeable about this band and our genre of music.

Hopefully we’ll have it available for purchase online in the not so distant future. Check out our MySpace page for more information

Ashby has just made his way to Saskatchewan for a Special Consensus show with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, a last minute show filling in for Jerusalem Ridge.

Brance posted on Tuesday about the special Station Inn performance this week by Mashville Brigade and friends.

The band was initially formed late in ‘06 by Ashby Frank and a number of other hot young pickers when Frank was living in Nashville and working with Alecia Nugent’s band. It included Jim Van Cleve on fiddle, Darrel Webb on guitar, Greg Martin on bass, Aaron McDaris on banjo and Frank on mandolin. Their plan was to play at Nashville’s Station Inn on occasional Tuesday evenings, much as a group know as The Sidemen had done a few years ago, assembled from members of other Nashville-based bluegrass bands.

Now that Ashby is off touring with Special Consensus, the membership at Mashville Brigade shows fluctuates wildly, and the show this past Tuesday was set to feature a number of high-profile guests, including Scott Vestal and Josh Williams.

We hear that even more unexpected special guests were on hand, and before the evening was concluded, country star Dierks Bentley joined the band for a song, as did Shawn Camp and Tina Adair. Sounds like a night of good fun and great music.

Ashby actually emailed from the Salt Lake City airport, to say that he had hated to miss that show, but had an interesting one of his own.

“Special Consensus did a show with the Idaho State Civic Symphony in Pocatello, Idaho last night in their beautiful new symphony/performing arts center. It went over amazingly well!

The crowd gave us such a warm reception, and called us out for an encore. It’s not every day that a symphony plays a full set with a Bluegrass band (we played a few new songs by ourselves, but did most of the set with the symphony), and its not every day that a bluegrass band plays in Pocatello, ID!”

In recent months, a new group of sidemen have come together to fill the void. They call themselves the Mashville Brigade. The group performs most Tuesday nights at The Station Inn and consists of pickers who all play in different bands on the road.

The line up may not be exactly the same every night if one or more of the guys has a gig somewhere, but the group more or less consists of Aaron McDaris (banjo), Ashby Frank (mandolin), Darrel Webb (guitar), Greg Martin or Randall Barnes (bass), and Jim VanCleve (fiddle).

The group makes an effort to play a strait up hard driving bluegrass setlist each Tuesday night, entertaining the crowd of hardcore fans who turn out for the shows.

Tonight, the line up will be a little different, as the band welcomes a few friends to the stage to “Mash” one with them.

At tonight’s show, band will be:

Josh Williams – guitar and vocals (formerly of Rhonda Vincent)
Darrel Webb – Mandolin and vocals (Currently with Rhonda Vincent)
Tim Dishman – Bass (Special Consensus)
Scott Vestal – Banjo (Sam Bush Band)
Jim VanCleve – Fiddle (Mountain Heart)
Daren Shumaker – sound engineer (Ronnie Bowman & Mountain Heart)

We’re expecting a fun crowd and a lot of energy, as we just recently fronted a show for Dierks Bently (where he graciously gave the Mashville Brigade a glowing review from the stage) at a Charity event in Nashville. You just never know who’s gonna drop in and mash one or two with the band, too, so it’s usually pretty interesting!

The Station Inn has dubbed the Mashville Brigade shows as $5 Tuesdays. The cover charge, pizzas, and pitchers of beer are each $5. If you’re in town, be sure to stop by and watch the guys Mash one!

We heard last week from mandolinist Ashby Frank with word of a new “second band” featuring members of several Nashville-based bluegrass acts.

They are calling themselves Mashville Brigade, and they debuted at The Station Inn on December 5. Ashby said that they have more dates there in January, and hope to move into a semi-regular Tuesday night slot there next year.

The group consists of Frank (with Alecia Nugent’s band) on mandolin, Darrel Webb (of Wildfire) on guitar, Jim VanCleve (of Mountain Heart) on fiddle, Greg Martin on bass, and Aaron McDaris (the newest member of The Grascals) on banjo.

The new band got a nice feature in The Nashville City Paper last week, in which Ashby shared an insight into the name of the group.

"In bluegrass circles we always talk about really getting into something and mashing it," Frank said. "We’re going to be playing bluegrass styled music, but it will be very upbeat, a party type rather than more staid or traditional material. We’re not a jam band, but we will be playing an explosive, enjoyable brand of acoustic music."

Ashby told us that they will perform material from the various members’ solo projects, and bluegrass jam classics.
