Barry Scott & Second Wind

Barry Scott & Second WindWe’ve posted previously about the new group Barry Scott was putting together after leaving Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver last year. The new band is Barry Scott & Second Wind, and I’ve just noticed that the website is up and running for the new group. The site features biographical info about each of the band members, their tour schedule, photos, a few video clips, and more.

The band consists of Barry, Jason Leek, Steve Reeves, and Joe Dean Jr. You can read more about each of the band members on their respective bio pages at the band website.

They are currently accepting bookings for 2007, and inquiries can be made via the contact page on the band website. (Click on Schedule and you’ll see all the info you need to book the band.)

Good luck guys!

Wednesday night at IBMA – part 2

Here’s the second part of late night wanderings around the showcases. There was some really great music being played late last night, and I didn’t even make it to any of the jam sessions happening on various floors of the hotel. Here are a few more photos and some impressions of last night’s events.

It appeared as if Eddie Stubbs sat in one place for the entire day doing live interviews and broadcasts for WSM. At some point I stumbled across Byron House and Cody Kilby out in the hall working up a tune. Moving the other direction down the hall I spotted Chris Jones deep in conversation. Then I heard Don Rigsby & Midnight Call throwing down on some hard driving bluegrass.

I headed back toward the PineCastle showcase room and caught a jam in hall with Carl Jackson and some others. I finally did make to the PineCastle room which is where I spent the remainder of my evening. The first act I saw was the John Cowan Band. John was great as usual. I spent some time talking with Barry Scott in hall and then went back in and sat down to watch John Cowan and Ronnie McCoury accompany Pat Flynn on a set.

After that Blueridge took the stage. I may be a little biased since these guys are friends of mine, but I say with all honesty that it was the best performance I saw last night. The group as a whole is just incredible, they are tight and rehearsed, they know their arrangements, and the material is wonderful. In addition to all that, Alan Bibey is simply one of the best mandolin players in the business and Junior Sisk has got to be the most soulful singer I know. When he sings a song, you believe him. It’s always a great performance, but it’s also completely heartfelt. They really are a great traditional band, though Alan is certainly capable of so much on the mandolin that I hate to qualify him that way. If you can’t tell, I like these guys’ music. Check them out when you get a chance.

That’s it for now, but we have more photos of the event from contributing photographers and we’ll try and get some more galleries up soon.

Barry Scott’s 2nd Wind

barry scottFormerly playing bass/guitar and singing with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Barry Scott has stepped out on his own. He left Doyle sometime ago and speculation was rampant over what his plans were. Many of his fans were sorely disappointed when he left Doyle and, it seemed, the bluegrass music scene.

Barry took a little break, spent some time with his family, and now he’s back. He caught his 2nd Wind it seems. Barry Scott and 2nd Wind is the name of the new band he is putting together.

The name is Barry Scott and 2nd Wind. The band consists of Steve Reeves (Gilbert, SC) on guitar/vocals, Jason Leek (Bristol, VA) on bass guitar/vocals, and myself on guitar and vocals. I’m still trying out banjo and mandolin players, as well as record labels. We have plans of a spring release for a new CD. The music is a mixture of Gospel and secular bluegrass music.

Keep an eye out for Barry and his new band. We’ll be bringing you updates as we get them.

Barry Scott leaving Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver

Thanks to Cindy Baucom for this piece of news:

Barry Scott will be leaving Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver at the end of this year. Barry has been singing, and playing bass, with Doyle for nine years this Thanksgiving. While he has enjoyed every minute of it, he says he is burnt out on music and needs a change. We don’t know what is next for Barry, but we’re sure he’ll be spending some time with his family after being on the road full time.

I called and spoke with Suzanne Lawson this morning and she said they are saddened to see Barry leave, but wish him the best in his future endeavors. She said Doyle won’t try to replace Barry. Rather, he will seek to fill the vacancy in the band.

You just can’t replace someone in a band like this. Barry has unique talents and skills, everyone does. In Doyle’s band it’s really about the singing. Doyle will find someone to fill the post and then use their talents to enhance the overall band sound.

Over the years Doyle has seen a number of band member changes and yet the band has retained his trademark sound of fine harmony singing and great timing. We see no reason to suspect otherwise this time around. So while we’ll miss Barry, we look forward to hearing a lot of great singing from DL&Q in the future.
