Sonny Osborne video snippet available on Gibson site

Sonny Osborne video on Gibson siteGibson has made a brief video lesson from Sonny Osborne available on their web site. It is taken from his Homespun DVD, The Bluegrass Banjo of Sonny Osborne, and has him demonstrating his solo for Sunny Side Of The Mountain.

The video clip runs about a minute and a half, and a tab for the song is presented on the Gibson site along with the video.

Mandolin Cafe has published a press release from Gibson that promises more online lessons from Gibson artists, but it isn’t clear whether there will be any new content, or simply video and tab samples from commercially available DVD releases.

An excellent and enjoyable video clip to be sure, but is Sonny really a “Gibson artist”?

Clearly, he ranks right up there with Earl and JD at the top of the list of great musicians who have made their mark playing Gibson banjos, but unlike them, he does not have (and to my recollection, never has had) an endorsement arrangement with the company. Given the exceptional quality, value and popularity of his own Osborne Chief instruments, it would be surprising to me to find that he now has an endorsement deal of some kind with Gibson.

Having said all that, I am still very happy to see Gibson promoting the preservation (and distribution) of such a wonderful piece of instructional material – here’s hoping we see many more examples like this from a diverse range of “Gibson artists”!

Good point. Not only is Sonny not really a current Gibson endorser – though he owns a number of pre war Mastertones – he also markets a banjo (The Chief) that might be seen as being in competition with Gibson.

I guess Gibson takes the broad view of what makes for a Gibson artist.
