Just returned from Merlefest with a copy of Sierra Hull’s CD, Secrets. There isn’t any doubt that she’s a talented mandolin player, but I don’t like the CD. She sounds like an immature Allison Krauss. In fact the whold CD sounds like Union Station. I wonder if that’s because it’s produced my Ron Block and uses Bary Bales, Dan Tyminski, Ron Block and on one track, Jerry Douglas. Stuart Duncan plays fiddle on several tracks. It’s all very professional, but not very new.
Sierra seems to have the skill, but not the feeling of Chris Thile. A great session musition, but I don’t see much else. Too bad.
