Rockygrass announces 2006 lineup

Planet Bluegrass has just announced the complete lineup for this years RockyGrass bluegrass festival. The festival takes place in Lyons, CO July 28-30. 2006 is an exciting year for RockyGrass as it marks it’s 34th year, and it’s the fist year that banjo legend Earl Scruggs will be performing at the festival. Other first time performers this year include Steve Earle, Douglas Barenberg and Meyer, and Yonder Mountain String Band.

This year”s lineup brings together multiple generations of bluegrass legends. Earl Scruggs, Roland White, and Richard Greene defined the bluegrass style as members of Bill Monroe”s seminal Bluegrass Boys. Newgrass pioneers Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, and Darol Anger have been pushing traditional bluegrass music in novel directions since the 1970s.

Songwriters Steve Earle, Darrell Scott, and Tim O”Brien continue to expand the bluegrass songbook. Popular bands Blue Highway and Mountain Heart have helped define the sound of contemporary bluegrass, while young bands Yonder Mountain String Band, Crooked Still (led by cellist Rushad Eggleston), The Wilders, Uncle Earl, and The Stringdusters represent the best of the current generation of acoustic music.

Tickets and camping for the festival are on sale now from bluegrass.com or 800-624-2422.

The festival is held along the wooded banks of the beautiful St. Vrain River. Along with the main stage performances are solo instrument and band contests, a kids area, and campground jams throughout the night at both Meadow Park and the Planet Bluegrass Ranch. Non-musical recreation includes innertubing the St. Vrain from the Planet Bluegrass Ranch through the Meadow Park whitewater course, and mountain biking and hiking at nearby Hall Ranch.

In addition to the three-day music festival, Planet Bluegrass hosts the RockyGrass Academy in the week leading up to the festival. This five-day academy, gives musicians of all levels the opportunity to study bluegrass from the masters of the style. This year”s Academy includes 3 bands in residence: Blue Highway, rising Nashville stars The Stringdusters and the Tony Trischka Bluegrass Band featuring Roland White.

Younger musicians (ages 7-14) can spend the week with the musicians of Bearfoot Bluegrass, a quintet from Alaska. In addition, Planet Bluegrass offers an instrument building course led by master luthiers Michael Hornick (Shanti Guitars) and Dan Roberts (Santa Cruz Guitars).
