Red Shipley tribute/benefit concert

This post is a contribution from Dave Roye, known to many of our readers as Crawdaddy Dave.

Some of northern Virginia’s finest bluegrass musicians will be performing in a musical tribute to bluegrass radio personality Red Shipley on Saturday, March 25th, at the William Monroe High School Performing Arts Center in Stanardsville, VA. Shipley, a resident of Orange County, VA, has broadcast the gospel sounds of Stained Glass Bluegrass to loyal bluegrass fans every Sunday since 1984 on radio stations WJMA, WCUL, WAMU and more recently via the internet on Bluegrasscountry.org. He is also a regular MC for many of the finest bluegrass festivals held in this area. Shipley suffered a stroke in September of 2005, but continues to broadcast his show from his home in Orange.

Headlining this show will be Randy Waller and the Country Gentlemen. Randy, son of the late bluegrass music legend Charlie Waller, has taken up the mantle of the Country Gentlemen since Charlie’s passing, along with David Kirk, Gary Creed, and Mark Delaney.

Also performing will be Phoenix, from Charlottesville, VA and The Courtney Hollow Band from Madison County, VA. The musicians want to say thanks to Red for all he has done for them and for bluegrass music in general, and to assist him with the costs of his extensive physical therapy. Proceeds from this performance will go directly to Shipley, as these artists are donating their time as a tribute to Red.

More information about this concert is available online, or by calling Bill Collins at 540.948.4685.
