Patrick McAvinue – Rutlands Reel
Almost as soon as I walked in to the Convention Center on Monday, I ran into talented young fiddler Patrick McAvinue, currently with Audie Blaylock & Redline. He was with his charming young lady, Sarah Fitzmaurice, herself a fine bluegrass singer and musician.
Patrick gave me a copy of his new CD, Rutlands Reel, just released on Patuxent Music, which features a mix of classic fiddle music and hard driving traditional bluegrass. A number of tracks feature Patrick and Michael Cleveland on twin fiddles (Rutland’s Reel, Down Yonder, Henry Rutland’s Country Classic Waltz) and one with Nate Leath (With Body And Soul), another stellar young fiddler.
Audie Blaylock plays guitar and sings a couple, with Jesse Brock and Michael Cleveland on mandolin, and Barry Reid on bass. Pete Kelly plays banjo throughout, excepting two banjo/fiddle duets with Chris Warner.
The fiddle playing is brilliant, and in a surprise for a 20 year old musician, the arrangements and note choices call to mind the seminal Kenny Baker albums of the 1970s. Fans of that fiddle style will be happy to know that the young ‘uns are keeping it alive.
There are no audio samples online just yet, but look for them soon on Patrick’s site.

There has been a great deal of speculation, and a fair amount of misinformation, concerning the status of Audie Blaylock & Redline. We reported back in April that Michael Cleveland had launched a group of his own called Flamekeeper, when he announced that he would be leaving Dale Ann Bradley, which we...
Audie Blaylock and his newly reformed Redline have released their first single, Lonesome Weary Heart.
The track will be distributed shortly to bluegrass radio, but Audie sent us an audio sample so that folks can hear his new group, and as he put it, that they have the same "hard drivin' traditional...
Guitarist and vocalist, Audie Blaylock (former member of Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys and more recently Rhonda Vincent & The Rage), has signed with Lonesome Day Records to record and release the debut CD for Blaylock and his band, Redline.
Joining Audie in Redline is another Jimmy Martin alumnus,...
Here's another in our series of 2009 Red Carpet videos. These were filmed immediately prior to the IBMA Award Show.
This one features Katy Daley interviewing Patrick McAvinue and his fiancée Sarah Fitzmaurice.

For a change, I was able to stay for all three main stage acts at Wednesday's (9/30) lunchtime showcase, and I saw some very strong performances.
Darren Beachley & Legends Of The Potomac were up first. That may sound like a fairly grandiose name for a new band, but with former Seldom Sceners Tom...
