Palmer Divide – Shenandoah Train

Palmer Divide - Jody Adams, Dick Carlson, Greg Reed, Mickey StinnettColorado’s Palmer Divide is set to release a new CD, Shenandoah Train, on June 2. This will be their fourth recording project since the band was formed in 2004 with the goal of highlighting their original compositions and arrangements.

The band consists of Jody Adams on mandolin, fiddle and vocals, Dick Carlson on bass, Greg Reed on guitar, mandolin and vocals, and Mickey Stinnett on banjo, guitar, resonator guitar and vocals.

Adams is the band’s primary songwriter whose credits outside the band will make you sit up and take notice. Friday Night Lights, the hit NBC television show, has selected a number of his songs to be featured during the program, and he composed the theme for the popular radio talk show Bill Bennett’s Morning In America.

Stinnett tells us that Shenandoah Train contains 11 new tracks from Palmer Divide, with all but one being band originals.

Palmer Divide - Shenandoah Train“All the songs were written by the band except April’s Fool which was written by Eddy Lee Bullington.

Eddy passed away 3 years ago and was a tremendous songwriter, and our version is a tip of the hat to Eddy and his accomplishments.”

You can hear two of the tracks (Whiskey Row and Shenandoah Train) on the band’s MySpace page.

They have also put together a video interview that introduces the guys and their approach to bluegrass and acoustic music.

Bill Yates – Country Gentlemen tribute

Bluegrass fans immediately recognize the name Bill Yates for his many years as a member of The Country Gentlemen. Bill played bass and sang harmony with the band through several line up changes, staying with Charlie Waller for 20 years, starting in 1969. In early December, Mastershield Records will...

Mac Wiseman – Bluegrass Hits and Heartsongs

One of the recent new releases from Rebel Records is Mac Wiseman's Bluegrass Hits and Heartsongs (REB CD 7523). The 14 recordings in this collection came about due to the mutually beneficial liaison during the mid-1970s between Lou Ukelson, owner of Vetco Records, who was keen to give the label a...

David Parmley & Continental Divide – 3 Silver Dollars

The release on February 10 of 3 Silver Dollars (PRC 1168) marked the sixth Pinecastle Records album for David Parmley and Continental Divide. Following the excellent Gospel collection, Church House Hymns, Parmley has switched tack and done what is mostly a secular album this time. 3 Silver Dollars...

    Chris Stuart – Crooked Man

On my personal list of bluegrass artists who rarely get the exposure and credit they deserve, songwriter Chris Stuart's name is always prominent. Songwriters generally toil in the shadows, and folks in the business are among the few who keep up with who has written what. Chris currently has two songs...

He tells us that the band is still working on their next CD, to be released on Pinecastle Records, for whom Parmley had recorded several previous projects. Ron says there will be 12 tracks, and...

The debut band CD from Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper, featuring Audie Blaylock, is being recorded now in Nashville. Luke McKnight is the Leader of the Band

Luke McKnight is the son of Gwen McReynolds, the oldest of Jesse's four children. He has worked as part of the Virginia Boys since 1994 or 1995 when he joined on a part time basis and, I recall, he piqued my interest in him when I heard him singing on Our Kind Of Country (Pinecastle PRC 1108). In fact,...

    Ron Spears joins David Parmley

Recently departed from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Ron Spears has become the newest member of David Parmley and Continental Divide. Ron replaces the outgoing Randy Graham on mandolin and tenor vocals. Ron is also a very fine song writer, and I'm sure a tune or two of his will find its way into the...
