New from Dailey & Vincent

Dailey & Vincent in concert - Jeff Parker, Jamie Dailey, Darrin Vincent, Joe DeanWhen we interviewed Dailey & Vincent in Nashville during IBMA week last year, they were tight-lipped about their upcoming Rounder CD, Brothers From Different Mothers. They wouldn’t even discuss the songs they had recorded, preferring to keep mum until closer to the March 31 release date.

I saw them in concert this past weekend, and while they didn’t push the new CD, they did perform a number of new songs which will be on the Brothers release. They also mentioned that plans were already underway for their third recording, an all a capella project, scheduled to start later in 2009.

Obviously, Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent (along with Jeff Parker and Joe Dean) excel in presenting bluegrass Gospel in this format, so that future release should be another big award-winner when it eventually hits the street.

One thing that was new about their a capella offerings on stage Saturday night was seeing the four singers put down their instruments and lift wireless microphones from their stands to sing Southern Gospel style. They had it down pat… standing in close quarters and gesturing appropriately. The audience ate it up.

I did find out a bit more about the new CD…

As would be expected after such a big album as their 2008 debut, there are a number of follow-ups to be found. A second Gillian Welch and David Rawlings song, Winter’s Come and Gone, is featured as a duet. Darrin even reprises the use of his archtop guitar which he played for years singing with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder.

There is also a new song with a familiar title, Your Love Is Like A Flower, which I heard Darrin sing on the show. Jamie says that he first heard it at a jam session while he was with Doyle Lawson, though it was recorded by Larry Stephenson almost 20 years ago.

There are two Statler Brothers songs, and a new one from Jimmy Fortune. They even had Harold Reid reprise his role as Lester “Roadhog” Moran for the bass line in the opening track, Head Hung Down.

A number of guest artists are featured on the CD in addition to the crack road band (Joe Dean on banjo, Jeff Parker on mandolin, Adam Haynes on fiddle). Bryan Sutton plays some guitar, Ron Block some banjo and both Tim Crouch and Stuart Duncan add fiddle.

Sounds like another gem from the runaway winners at last year’s IBMA Awards.
