Music therapy

Music and drug useI was aware that music is used in therapy to relieve stress and tension, but apparently the Taiwanese have been successfully incorporating violin lessons into their drug rehab program recently.

Taiwan News has the story.

The Taichung Drug Abuse Treatment Center has succeeded in using violin lessons over the past six months to help with the treatment and rehabilitation of 40 drug abusers, center director Chou Hui-huang said Tuesday.

After two classes of 20 patients each, the center plans to continue using the program.

I’m assuming these lessons are primarily classical violin music. Playing American rock music, on the other hand, has the opposite affect and drives people into the drug use that puts them in the rehab center.

I wonder where Bluegrass music falls on this music/drugs continuum?
