Jim and Josh’s excellent adventure

Jim Van Cleve at IBMAI had a nice conversation this afternoon with fiddlemeister Jim VanCleve, during which he shared word about his and Josh Shilling’s unexpected trip to St. Croix to play music. Apparently Jim has a business acquaintance who is involved in bringing bluegrass artists down to the islands, and when a last-minute cancellation put him in a bind, he called Jim to see if he might be able to throw something together quickly and fill in.

Jim said that they took a ton of photos, and that Josh is putting together a little travelogue for us to publish here on The Bluegrass Blog. Look for that to appear soon, along with their swimwear photos.

Josh and Jim are also playing the Grand Ole Opry tonight with Mountain Heart. They are scheduled in the 9:00-9:30 segment (EDT), which you can catch over the air on 650 AM from Nashville, via online streaming at wsmonline.com, and on XM channel 11 (XM Nashville).

Josh Shilling – hometown boy makes good

We've written a good bit this past few months about Josh Shilling, the newest member of Mountain Heart who had the unenviable job of taking the spot held by founding member, Steve Gulley, on guitar and vocals. Josh and the rest of the band will release their newest CD, Road That Never Ends - The Live...

    Another Opry bluegrass weekend

There's been so much bluegrass on The Grand Ole Opry this past few months that I feel like I'm repeating myself each Friday when I point out who's on. This week is no exception, with Mountain Heart performing on both the Friday and Saturday night shows from The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. If you...

Mountain Heart unveils their new sound this weekend on The Grand Ole Opry, introducing guitarist/vocalist Josh Shilling for the first time on last night's Friday Opry, and performing again tonight on the Opry radio broadcast. They got a call back from the Opry audience last night after Josh sang one...

    Remembering Josh Graves

I have never achieved fame for playing the dobro. But I shall never forget the first time I heard Josh Graves play. In 1960 I was a nine year old kid who came in the house one saturday afternoon. About that time Josh started taking a break on a song. I don't remember the song, but I will never forget...

The race starts at 1:30 p.m. (EDT), and they are scheduled to sing at roughly 1:25. Coverage...

    Rob Ickes on Josh Graves

We are pleased to publish another tribute to Uncle Josh Graves, this one from the 2006 IBMA Dobro Player of the Year, Rob Ickes. I was able to go to the service on Tuesday, and it was a really nice tribute to Josh. Eddie Stubbs gave an amazing eulogy. Josh Graves' was probably the first dobro playing...

    Uncle Josh passes away

Dan Hayes, Executive Director of IBMA, was just by the booth here in the exhibit hall and was talking to John when his phone rang with the bad news. Josh Graves passed away this morning here in Nashville. Uncle Josh was a major contributing force in bringing the dobro to high regard in bluegrass music....

    Remembering Uncle Josh

Over the next few days, we hope to publish a number of brief tributes to Josh Graves from resonator guitarists whose own music was shaped in part by Josh's. This first comes from Mike Auldridge: Josh Graves influenced my life beyond mere words of gratitude. He changed my life. I would not be a...

Uncle Josh Graves on You Tube

Of interest on You Tube: Uncle Josh Graves plays Reuben's Train in one of his final performances, a month before his passing. Great three minute clip of Uncle Josh with Bobby Osborne on mandolin and Dean Osborne on banjo....

More Mountain Heart photos from Switzerland

As promised, here are a few more photos from the recent Mountain Heart visit to Switzerland. Jim Van Cleve passed along a note about the drink Jason Moore was holding in one of the earlier photos we posted. "I wanted to let the readers know that it actually is a "Coca-Cola Light...that's what a Diet...
