IBMA Awards show and patriotic music

This is the first time I heard the awards show.  I am disappointed that Mr. Crow made such a scene and his personal concerns of integrity somehow got more important than a nice finish to the joy and artistry of the show itself. Also, if there was only one song played in tribute to our service personnel …it should have been done by the Navy band. How weird it would have been to hear the Navy band play only nonpatriotic songs while other bands saluted our military personnel. Get real. Be thankful that the Navy supports and promotes bluegrass music through Country Current. I know I am glad about it because I want to hear more bluegrass played not less.

    Patriotism isn’t politics…

Friends: In response to the person from the Netherlands to "keep American politics out of the IBMA", it appears he is defining "politics" as ANY indication or mention of our nationality, then proceeds to launch a critique of current administration policies. The performing of traditional patriotic...

    IBMA debate

Friends:   It enrages me that there would be any question as to having patriotic music at IBMA. Sure, there are people there from other countries, but we are the HOST country! If any attendees are offended(as if we did something obscene), at us honoring our own history and military, they...

Mighty Fine and a Great Big Howdy

Hey Boys and Girls... It's awards night and I am backstage in historical (or is it hysterical) Dressing Room #11 at the legendary Grand Ole Opry House.  I'm going to be one of your hosts with the mosts as we celebrate bluegrass music at the Seventeenth Annual International Bluegrass Music...

Hi there from Washington State! I manage a hillbilly jamgrass band called Deadwood Revival.  We're "out of the box", but bluegrass fans seem to love us anyway.  Nice. I have a question ....  how are the smaller Bluegrass Festivals faring around the country??  We've had...

    Goodbye Butch

I first met Butch in Las Vegas around 1979.  We were both in the gaming business.   Butch was a crap dealer at the MGM Grand, and I worked for the casino surveillance department of the Hilton.   I had just transplanted from Ashland, PA and wanted to find a place to play and learn...

    Criticism

I have to agree with Jon Weisberger on this one.  We have to give artists the freedom to experiment and express themselves or this music is headed nowhere, fast.  As a side note, I have heard Flatt & Scruggs on vintage Opry broadcasts performing "Cryin Holy Unto the Lord", and the drums...

    IBMA

Congratulations Rhonda, for speaking up for what you believe to be right for the industry and not following those who are afraid to say what they believe. Your comment that you had found others who felt like you did within the group was interesting .  Did no one else see it? Or, was it easier...

    Harry Lane

Harry made a banjo neck for me in the early 70's.  At that time he was just beginning to make banjos and I remember only a few at his place.  Our group, "The Cumberlands" played several times a year at "The Boar's Head" in Savannah and we became friends with Harry and his brother, Tom. ...
