Happy Independence Day!

The Bluegrass Blog would like to wish a happy Independence Day to all our US readers – with a hearty “no hard feelings” to our friends in England.

To help put everyone in a festive mood, here’s a video of Ross Nickerson performing a medley of patriotic songs on the five string banjo.

    Merlefest videos on YouTube

With more than 75,000 music lovers in attendance - a great many with video recorders of some kind - it should come as no surprise that dozens of videos shot at Merlefest 2008 have popped up on YouTube. Of course at such an eclectic festival, the offerings range from old time bluegrass... ...to...

    Sirius celebrates bluegrass independence

Our friends at Sirius Bluegrass, Chris Jones and Ned Luberecki, have an interesting twist on the US celebration of Independence Day this weekend. Instead of songs with patriotic themes, they will instead feature the music of the many celebrated artists who started their careers as a member of Bill...

    Young Turks Hatin’ on Bluegrass

Ignorance on parade... Is there anything more obnoxious than people who believe something is worthless if they haven't heard of it? Of course, I've never heard of these guys, or their YouTube show, but it seems to be a popular online video channel....

    Jethro, Red – and Bill

Our friends at The Bluegrass Ireland Blog found a terrific video on YouTube that is sure to be a treat for bluegrass mandolin fans. It features Jethro Burns performing a talking blues tribute to the greats of the mandolin, with able assistance from Red Rector. Jethro and Red each take a turn with...

    Ickes, Pikelny, Driessen on YouTube

After teaching at Sore Fingers Week in England earlier this month, Rob Ickes, Noam Pikelny and Casey Driessen did some touring in the UK as The Nashville Acoustic All Stars. Punch Brothers on YouTube

We had posted back in August when Chris Thile and his merry band of super pickers announced a three day string of shows at Nashville's fabled Station Inn. They were, at the time of that posting, billed as The Tensions Mountain Boys, but within a few weeks their rebirth as The Punch Brothers had been...

    Stringdusters in Europe on YouTube

Chris Pandolfi, banjo player with The Infamous Stringdusters, is debuting his talent as a documentary filmmaker during the band's current European tour. He will be posting video updates on YouTube while the band is overseas, with the first three available now online. This initial installment covers...

    Daughters Of Bluegrass on YouTube

On October 28, 2006 The Daughters Of Bluegrass took home the coveted Recorded Event of the Year award for their second CD release, Back To The Well. The evening before the awards were announced, they also performed at an official IBMA showcase, and video from that show is now posted on YouTube. Songs...

Banjo band – boon or bane?

Our friends at ukbluegrass.com have really started a ruckus... In their post about We Banjo 3, an Irish quartet, they once again raise the spectre of the banjo band. The group features 3 - and sometimes 4 - banjos playing at once, mixing playing styles and genres as they go. The group began with...
