Sure, he was a bit of a jerk, but that’s often the case with genuises. The fact is, along with a handful like Ellington and Armstrong, he’s one of the great forces of American music (listen to “My Last Days on Earth” if you think he’s not in their class). Happy Birthday you old b——.
