Guinness banjo attempt in Atlanta today

We have told you previously about the folks at Banjo.com in Atlanta, and their attempt to set the Guinness Record for Largest Musical Ensemble – using banjo players. That record attempt, dubbed A Tribute To Earl Scruggs, is scheduled for today (9/13), just prior to the game between the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies at Turner Field.

Rain is expected in Atlanta this morning, but John Drummond at Banjo.com tells us that they expect it to clear late this afternoon, and they have high hopes that the banjo players will be able to assemble on the field and take a stab at the new record. The stated plan is to go for the record without regard to the weather, at approximately 6:45 p.m. Earl Scruggs is expected to attend and witness several hundred banjo pickers offering a record-setting rendition of Foggy Mountain Breakdown.

More details, and a complete schedule of events for participants, can be found at Banjo.com.

We hope to have some photos of the event for you on The Bluegrass Blog Thursday morning, along with news about the record attempt. A three-camera video shoot is also planned for this evening, with a DVD available within a few weeks.

Best of luck to all the banjo pickers in Atlanta as they attempt to honor Earl Scruggs with this Guinness Book record!
