Fastest Grass Alive

Here’s a fun story we just received from Kevin Triplett, Vice President of Public Affairs at the famed Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN. Kevin is also a bluegrasser, and an IBMA member, who snuck a couple of bluegrass boys in for a run on the track this afternoon.

Jerry Butler and Phil Leadbetter in the winners circle at the Bristol Motor SpeedwayPhil Leadbetter (Grasstowne) and Jerry Butler (Lorraine Jordan and Carolina Road) found themselves in Bristol, VA/TN today (April 28), the Birthplace of Country Music and home to Bristol Motor Speedway.

The two musicians, who have known each other since elementary school, took turns behind the wheel of Ledbetter’s 1977 Pontiac Firebird for a few laps around “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile.”

Ledbetter and Butler then pulled into victory lane at BMS; the same spot that has played host to some of the biggest names in NASCAR.

“That’s a lot more intimidating than it looks,” said Ledbetter. “I don’t know how those guys do it.”

No word yet on if either plans to enter the Sharpie 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race, Aug. 22.
