Earl Scruggs takes a spill in Myrtle Beach

Earl Scruggs appears to be in good shape following an unfortunate accident at the conclusion of his show this past Saturday. Scruggs was performing at the South Carolina State Bluegrass Festival in Myrtle Beach and fell approximately four feet from the edge of the stage.

Details are a bit fuzzy at this point, but it seems that the poor lighting and general confusion at the side of the stage led the 81 year old Scruggs to tumble to the floor. Fortunately, physicians in attendance rushed to his side, and paramedics arrived moments later. He was taken from the convention center in a neck brace, but only treated and released at the emergency room for a cut over his eye.

The Myrtle Beach Sun News has a report on their web site.

We got a first hand report from Cindy Baucom, who was at the show with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver:

“Doyle and the band were next in the line-up….they were pretty shaken up with what had happened. Terry said the first song of the set was difficult to get through, being so worried about Earl. Jamie Dailey offered a prayer from the stage and the show continued. I asked Norman Adams as we were leaving what the latest report was and he said it looked as though Earl was going to be all right and we were all thankful.

One of the band members performing with Earl last night said the way an extra mic stand was angled down, it did appear to be a handrail and perhaps that was the reason…..I don’t know….just really a sad thing to happen at the end of his incredible set.”

We’ll update this report with any further information we are able to obtain.
