Bluegrass Sundays at the Strasburg Theater

“Bluegrass Sundays” started off this past week with a sparse but vocal and appreciative audience singing and clapping along to the wonderful music of “Sound Roots”. I’d like to send out a very special thank you to Bob and Tonia McConchie, daughter Amanda and all their musical friends for coming out and getting us started with the Bluegrass Sundays Event. I’ll tell you, this family based group really put on a clinic with just amazing finger picking blues, appalachin mountain music, gospel and traditional bluegrass. Alternating between mandolin, banjo, and guitar, you never knew which member was going to be playing what. And Amanda really showed ‘em what for on that fiddle too! What a great way to kick things off.

Next Sunday, September 2nd: Thunder Creek!

Wait’ll you get a load of these guys! This Sunday afternoon, September 2nd, the Bluegrass and Gospel Bluegrass Showcase continues with a fantastic band based out of Southeastern VA: Thunder Creek! I was fortunate enough to view an advance copy of their DVD recorded live at Kitty Hawk, NC and boy, lemme tell you, these guys are as tight as a funeral drum. Thunder Creek is going to surprise and delight their audience with tight harmonies and incredible jamming skills.

AND we have some very special guests opening up the show: Middletown’s own “Way Station”! That’s right, many of you know the Way Station (formerly the Wolfe Family) from past bluegrass events, including an incredible opening stint with the great Del McCoury. Winners of countless bluegrass titles, Way Station have shared the stage with some of the biggest and best in the business. Led by banjo prodigy Buddy Wolfe, they’ll be setting that stage on fire with their superb picking and singing!

The Sunday Afternoon Bluegrass Shows begin at 1 pm and run until around 5. The cost is only $5 for adults and $3 for kids. We’ll have food and beverages available, and plenty of room to move around. This is an all- ages, non-smoking event. Please make plans to bring the entire family.
