Another new Rebel release from last month is In God’s Time from Barry Scott & Second Wind.

This project had been released as a self-produced CD last year, available only from the band, and Rebel picked it up when Scott signed with them in November of ‘08. Unless you may have picked up a copy from the band at a live show, this Rebel release will probably be your first exposure to the CD.

Barry performed as a member of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver for almost 10 years, leaving at the end of 2005. At the time, he said that he needed to get away from the road life for a while, but like most artists with the music in their blood, it wasn’t long before he was back at it with his own band.

In God’s Time is a sort of hybrid album – part solo project and part band record. Barry said that it wasn’t planned that way…

“The last year I was with Doyle, I was going to cut a solo project. Dale Perry was with us at the time, and I started working on the solo CD at Dale’s studio. When I started putting together the band, I wasn’t sure whether I should do a solo project or a band CD, and we ended up with a little of both.”

The band has been together for the past two years, and consists of Jason Leek on bass, Travis Houck on resonator guitar, Matthew Munsey on mandolin,and 14 year old Zane Petty on banjo. Scott is on guitar and all the band members but Petty share in the vocals.

“I’ve known Jason Leek for a long time, and had always said that if I ever left Doyle, I would want him singing with me. When I did leave I wasn’t even sure if I would start a band, but knew I would be singing somewhere, and wanted Jason with me.

All of these guys had been playing together for some time and it worked out great when we started playing together as Second Wind.

We played in Gatlinburg, TN a good bit last summer and met a lot of new fans and friends, plus it helped us tighten up as a group. It was the best practicing we could have done – playing 5 days a week for several hours each night. We also got a lot of bookings from our shows there.”

As the title suggests, In God’s Time is an all-Gospel CD, and one standout is their a cappella version of Glorified Body.

“That’s a song I had heard my mom and dad sing when I was a boy. I started playing it one day at rehearsal, and thought ‘this is one we need to learn.’ The lyrics are so powerful, and I wanted to give it an a cappella arrangement to really showcase the message.

We had to hunt to find the writer’s info since the song was so old. It has become one of most requested songs already when we do church shows.”

Another one of the tracks will be familiar to longtime Quicksilver fans, one that Barry wrote and recorded with Doyle on his Gospel Parade CD in 2001.

“I wanted to recut this in a different way. It just seemed like the logical thing to do, to show my own personal take on one that folks would recognize.”

Seven of the fourteen tracks are songs that Barry wrote, and the closing track, Daddy’s Dream, is the one that hits closest to home. The song is dedicated to his father, Floyd, and based on his mom telling Barry that by being out on the road singing and playing music for a living, he was “living his daddy’s dream.”

The track begins with a piece of audio of a very young Barry singing with his dad, and also features Vince Gill on tenor vocal and fingerstyle guitar.

“Vince is one of my heroes – an amazing talent. We got to be friends when I was with Doyle. I met him several times and picked with him backstage at The Opry. One day I mentioned to him that if I ever got to record a solo project, I would be honored to have him come and sing on it, and he reached in his pocket and handed me his card saying, ‘Just give me a call when you’re ready.’

I thought it might be a card for his management – but it was his personal cell phone number. When we were working on this CD, I gave him a call and he was happy to be a part of it.”

In addition to his regular bandmates, In God’s Time features Kenny Smith on guitar, Ronald Inscore on mandolin, Aaron Till on fiddle, and Joe Dean and Jason Davis on banjo.

Barry and the guys are currently finishing up an all a cappella Gospel project, which they will release themselves in August, and a new secular project for Rebel.
