Banjo CD from Steve Martin?

Steve MartinToday’s (12/2) edition of The Washington Post contains a lengthy feature on comedian, actor, author Steve Martin – who we all know is also a man who is passionate about the banjo and banjo playing

From his earliest days in stand-up through his recent participation in Tony Trischka’s Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectatcular CD, Martin has always remained faithful to his banjo roots.

The article, written by Post TV writer Tom Shales, mixes biographical background with a current interview. Towards the end of the interview, Shales asks about what’s left for him to accomplish.

Do you worry about “things not done” that you wish you had?

I don’t think about that. But I do want to do something with the banjo. I don’t know what yet — make a record or something. Might play a couple of songs and then just present the banjo on a record the way I like to hear it. I’ve been playing it for 40 years and I like it, I really like it. I find it exhilarating and actually melancholy, too.

Now that is something to look forward to!

Yesterday's (2/4) edition of All Things Considered on National Public Radio included a lengthy interview with Steve Martin. Steve Martin in Bluegrass Now

It's been great to see the tremendous interest in Steve Martin's upcoming banjo CD within the overlapping banjo and bluegrass communities. Martin has been a banjo picker since before he made it big, first as a comedian and later as a film actor, author and playwright. When I was first learning to...

    Banjo players in the news

We found two interesting articles online that should be of interest to banjo pickers, and folks who enjoy banjo music. The first is a piece in today's Washington Post (1/19/07) on John McEuen. Written by Post staffer Richard Harrington, the article covers John's long career in music, from the early...

    Steve Martin on Billboard 200

Reuters reported last night that Steve Martin has landed on the Billboard 200 this week. Martin has not had an album chart since his 1981 LP The Steve Martin Brothers. That LP featured comedy cuts on side one, with banjo tracks on side two. This time around though, Martin has charted with a purely music...
