Allen Shelton diagnosed with leukemia
Banjo legend Allen Shelton has been hospitalized, diagnosed with leukemia. He is at the Centennial Medical Center in Nashville undergoing treatment, but this sort of leukemia is not curable. It is hoped that he can be stabilized and perhaps return home.
Visitation and phone calls are limited to immediate family at this time.
Allen is remembered for his brilliant banjo work with Jim Eanes and Jim & Jesse. I last heard him play about five years ago, and the joy he expressed in his music was as strong as ever. He is a man who loves people and music, and he has given a great deal to all banjo lovers – and lovers of fine music.
Words of encouragement and good cheer can be sent to:

The only time I saw Allen was when I met him in 1969 in a Baton Rouge recording studio. My photo above is from that day.
You can see the rest of the photos at http://frobbi.org/slides/la1969 as well as recordings from that weekend at http://frobbi.org/walker.html and http://frobbi.org/BatonRouge1969.html
Allen is a superb musician and a very nice guy!
My prayers go out to Allen and his family.

Today I exchanged email with Allen’s daughter in law.
She told me:
He has been in the hospital for four weeks now, but seems to be doing well. We are waiting now for news about his latest chemo treatment. Hopefully he will be able to come home soon.
He is a pretty private man, but would appreciate the prayers.
